St. Petersburg has always been Russia’s “window to the West.” At the time of its construction in the eighteenth century, Peter the Great envisioned a city encompassing the greatest architectural achievements of Western Europe: the romantic island-canal systems of Venice and Amsterdam, luxurious baroque architecture, and a court rivaling that of the French in power and elegance. However, the city has not always lived up to its intended purpose—to prove that Russia could leave behind her backwards ways and enter modernity with the rest of Europe (Figes 10). Thus the Petersburg myth was born—its foundations lying in this discrepancy between the idealized city and its real counterpart. The myth, which expresses Russia’s complicated experience of modernity, continues to be prevalent in contemporary St. Petersburg. The Marine Façade development project embodies the Petersburg myth and the three-hundred-year-old dichotomy between dreams and reality that lies at the heart of the city.

Мой проект рассматривает роль туризма в жизни современного Невского проспекта.  По мнению Маршала Бермана, Невский всегда был центром комерческой жизни города и в этом смысле противостоял военно-имперскому центру города вокруг Зимнего дворца.  Туризм стал настоящей индустрией, живущей по законам рыночной экономики, только после распада Советского Союза. Туризм изменил Невский проспект во многих отношениях. Разноязыкая и пестрая ватага туристов и покупателей сменила безликую серую толпу советского Невского.  В моем проекте я использую путеводители, книги по истории и интервью с предпринимателями и туристами с Невского проспекта.

Моника Бернотас/Пушкинская-10: “Свобода есть место для духа” (Абстракт)

Мой проект рассматривает цели и историю арт центра Пушкинская-10 в Санкт-Петербурге. В процессе работы над проектом я проинтервьюировала членов художественной общины, которые живут и работают в арт-центре. Среди них были художники, кинорежиссёр и кураторы выставок. Мне хотелось узнать, как изменилось неофициальное исскуство и сообщество художников в Санкт Петербурге с советских времен. Меня особенно интересовала цитата Курта Флекенштейна, которая висит на стене во дворе Пушкинской-10 “Свобода есть место для духа” “Freedom is Space for the Spirit” и служит своеобразным эпиграфом ко всему арт-центру. На основании моих исследований я пришла к выводу, что дух неофициального искусства продолжает жить в арт центре, несмотря на то, что сообщество художников вынуждено иметь дело со многими проблемами, среди которых одной из важнейших является старение самой общины.

Софи Косар/Морской Фасад: Морской Фасад и Миф Петербурга в постсоветской России (Абстракт)

Я хочу рассказать в своем сюжете о том, что Морской Фасад – это современное архитектурное продолжение традиций Санкт-Петербурга, и о том, что он является главными западными воротами России. Но так же я считаю, что необходимо затронуть немаловажную тему дискуссий и споров, всегда существовавших в обществе: сохранение и подчеркивание исторического духа Санкт-Петербурга против стремления к модернизации города.
